Choosing the Right Credit Card [Credit Cards]
November 17, 2007, 15:08:46

Opening your mailbox you are likely to be overwhelmed by the number of credit card offers that you receive. This is normal, and almost each card offer you receive will be for a different card. Some offer lower interest rates, some offer zero interest for a period of time, some charge annual fees, some charge monthly fees, some allow you to earn cash back, others allow you to earn points good towards gift certificates or even airplane tickets. The choices are huge, and the benefits are vastly different. The card that is appropriate for your parents or friends may not be appropriate for you.

Selecting the right card for your needs is a very important consideration. After all, if you never take airline trips do you really need a credit card that allows you to earn plane tickets? Would a card that allows you to earn free gas be better? What about a card that allows you to earn cash back? Look over all of the details for the card offers that you receive. Is the incentive something that you will actually use? There is no reason to sign up for a card just to have one; there are far too many cards that would be beneficial to you.

Choosing your card should rely heavily upon what your primary usage is as well. For example, if you shop at a particular department store a lot it may be a wise decision to apply for their store credit card. Many of these types of cards offer gift cards, or cash back rebates. If you spend large amounts of money at the store normally, these types of incentives can be a huge benefit. However, if you do not normally spend money at these stores you should not apply for the card just so you can spend large amounts. Your credit card selection should reflect your normal shopping style in order to obtain the best results.

If you are wanting to reduce the number of credit cards you have, or even work to save money from interest rates it may be a wise decision to look for a card that has 0% interest rates on balance transfers. This would allow you to transfer balances from cards with interest being actively charged to the 0% interest rate card. You would then make your normal monthly payments, but the entire amount you pay each month would be applied to the principal of the debt, rather than paying the interest charges first. This is a highly effective way of paying off credit card debt much faster. But if you have balances to transfer applying for a card with 0% interest on balance transfers as the only benefit is not a wise decision.

By carefully looking around you can find a card that fits your needs, and offers the lowest interest rate possible. Additionally, try to select a card that does not charge an annual fee in order to obtain the best financial value possible. Choosing a credit card is a decision that can take some time, always look over offers carefully to ensure you know what is being offered and by selecting the right card for your needs you should notice a huge improvement in the benefits that you are able to actually use.
